Reference codes for LB&SCR material in The National Archives

Introduction

The National Archives (TNA), formerly the Public Records Office, at Kew holds a large quantity of LB&SCR related material, from Minutes of Board meetings to Timetables and Rule books. This document is a list of some the codes and the descriptions of the materials held.

As an example the register of carriage and wagon stock in use around 1873-80 would be labelled: RAIL 414/741 (1841-1880). NB. The dates given by the National Archives may refer to the content of the documents rather than the date of compilation. In this case the register was probably compiled around 1873 and used until 1880, but includes carriages and wagons in use at that time but built in the early days of the LB&SCR.

The RAIL codes are generally arranged in alphabetical order of the railway company name.
